Nutrient density and digestibility

One of the main differences between Tropican High Performance Parrot food and other products is our significantly higher fat level. When we feed our birds other products, they develop smelly, wet droppings. These products are, basically, saladised farm feed and are probably formulated at a lower cost as farm bird feed (actually these feeds look like birdseed for chickens). These products have minimal levels of essential fatty acids and amino acids.

HARI decided to increase the caloric density of our formula with more fat, so the bird will have to eat and drink less. Our guaranteed fat level in the High Performance diet is a minimum of 11%. This is approximately double the fat found in other foods. HARI has had no obesity problems but more importantly, no skinny birds either. Other breeders using diets with lower fat levels report having skinny grey parrots and cockatiels, unless they supplement these foods with oilseeds such as sunflower seeds. Any meal that has to be supplemented with seeds or fruit cannot be said to be complete.

Protein levels

Birds, like all animals, eat to balance their energy needs. When comparing the protein versus dietary energy of Tropican High Performance parrot food with other bird foods, the levels are similar. Although the percentage of protein in the diet is different, so is the level of energy available. Because Tropican Parrot Food has a higher calorie density, the birds eat less. The amount of protein consumed and utilised by the bird is actually less with Tropican due to its higher fat levels. This also reduces the amount of protein the bird must use for energy. Metabolic water is a by-product of fat metabolism, which reduces water consumption. When protein is broken down and used as an energy source, the uric acid by-product of this process must be excreted by the kidney, which can be stressful.

Palatability

Parrots have significantly more taste buds than chickens, so why do many foods look and taste like chicken feed? Unlike farm feed these granules break down cleanly and do not explode into fine powder as with other foods. The parrot is able to keep the rest of the piece and eat the piece it has bitten off. Again this difference translates into a further benefit to the consumer as there is significantly less waste associated with Tropican Parrot Food.

Some bird owners find it difficult to feed their birds uniform, formulated diets. Tropican's generous levels of important nutrients allow it to be diluted (up to 20 percent on a by weight basis) by the addition of fruits and vegetables. Tropican is a tough, dense food that parrots will enjoy chewing. Tropican High Performance granules, sticks or biscuits ensure that picky eaters receive a complete and balanced diet. Since Tropican incorporates vitamins and minerals, no vitamin supplementation is needed.
